PH lifters pocket 7 silver medals in Asian Championships

MANILA, Philippines–The Philippines secured seven silver and seven bronze medals in the Asian Weightlifting Championships at Husnan Sports Park in Zhejiang, China Sunday night.
Two-time Olympian Elreen Ando of Cebu garnered three silver medals in the women’s 64kg category, lifting a total of 232kg (102-130).

Chinese Li Shuang bagged the gold medals in snatch (105kg), clean and jerk (134kg), and total (239kg) while Korean Mun Minhee placed third with 214kg (94-120).
Rosegie Ramos of Zamboanga City added three more silvers for Team Philippines, with a total lift of 197kg (90-107) in the women’s 49kg category.
Thanyathon Sukcharoen of Thailand registered the best lift of 200kg (91-109) while Xiang Linxiang of China finished third with 189kg (86-103).
In the men’s 55kg category, Cebuano Fernando Agad Jr. bagged the silver medal in clean and jerk (141kg) and was fourth in snatch (113kg) and total (254kg).

Wang Weidong of China ranked first with 265kg (119-146), followed by Gia Thanh Lai of Vietnam with 260kg (120-140) and Mansour Al Saleem of Saudi Arabia with 254kg (117-137).
Meanwhile, Kristel Macrohon, 2019 SEA Games gold medalist (71kg) and 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games bronze medal winner (69kg), will see action on Tuesday.
“Asian Weightlifting today dominates the Olympics. So, if you win a silver here will likely give you a chance in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. We have three more years to go and looks good. The more competition, the better,” Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas president Monico Puentevella said in an online interview Monday.
