MANILA, Philippines — With star Buds Buddin playing through an ankle injury, Leo Ordiales and Jade Disquitado stepped up when it mattered most to save National University’s five-peat dream in the UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball tournament.

NU coach Dante Alinsunurin was relieved to see Ordiales rise to the occasion, scoring 20 points in their 25-23, 25-23, 25-23 win over University of Santo Tomas in their Final Four do-or-die on Wednesday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“Finally, this is exactly what we’ve been looking for from him,” Alinsunurin said in Filipino. “We’ve always known what he’s capable of. The way we train, the way we brought him along even during our trips abroad, it’s because we believed he had so much to offer. And now he’s proving to be a huge help to the team.”

MANILA, Philippines — A third-place finish despite what Odjie Mamon believes to be the best University of Santo Tomas lineup ever was a bitter pill to swallow for the veteran UAAP tactician.

Mamon took the blame for the Golden Spikers’ Final Four exit following a 23-25, 23-25, 23-25 loss to reigning four-time champion National University in the UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday.

“I stand by my statement that this is the best Golden Spikers lineup ever. I just wasn’t able to polish the boys’ potential to the max,” said Mamon. “I’m bitter because we had high expectations. I did not want us to temper our expectations this season unlike the previous two years where we made the finals.”

UAAP: Injury-hit Buddin still finds ways to push NU to victory

MANILA, Philippines — Not even a right ankle sprain could stop Buds Buddin from helping defending champion National University clinch a 10th consecutive UAAP men’s volleyball finals appearance on Wednesday.

After missing the Bulldogs’ Final Four opening loss to University of Santo Tomas, Buddin returned and gave his team a much needed lift past the gritty Golden Spikers in their do-or-die.

Buddin checked in midway through the second set and made the crucial plays to lead NU’s comeback for a two-set advantage. He then drilled a clutch kill before digging Josh Ybañez’s attack that led to Jade Disquitado’s match-winner.

MANILA, Philippines — National University kept its five-peat dream alive after overcoming University of Santo Tomas, 25-23, 25-23, 25-23, for a return trip to the men’s volleyball finals in the UAAP Season 87 on Wednesday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Despite squandering a twice-to-beat advantage in a four-set loss last game, the Bulldogs’ championship poise was in full display, marching their way to their 10th straight finals.

NU tallied the longest streak in the men’s volleyball finals, surpassing UST’s nine consecutive from Seasons 57 to 65.

University of Santo Tomas lived another day after purging the twice-to-beat advantage of defending champion National University sans Buds Buddin, 26-24, 27-25, 19-25, 25-18, in the UAAP Season 87 men’s volleyball Final Four on Saturday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

With their backs against the wall — same as last year when they placed No.4 but took down the twice-to-beat Far Eastern University to return to the finals, Josh Ybañez unleashed his MVP form to lead the balanced attack of the Golden Spikers with 22 points and 16 excellent receptions to force a do-or-die game on Wednesday at the same venue.
